How We Research and Choose Quilts
Our recommendations are research-based. Here is exactly what that means, so you can judge how much weight to give them.
What we compare
For every quilt we consider, we collect and compare:
- Insulation: type (down or synthetic), fill power, stated fill weight and, where available, overfill.
- Warmth-to-weight: total weight against the temperature rating, normalized as far as published data allows. Our quilt weight guide shows the benchmarks.
- Construction: baffle style and height, footbox, draft collar and neck closure, and attachment system.
- Fit: available widths and lengths, measured against real shoulder girths.
- Materials: shell fabrics, DWR, down certification (RDS or equivalent).
- Value, lead time and warranty, including whether the quilt is in stock or built to order.
How we use owner feedback
Long-term owner reports reveal what spec sheets cannot: cold spots, down migration, zipper or strap problems, real-world warmth relative to the rating. We look for patterns across many independent reports and discount one-off complaints and obvious promotion.
How we treat temperature ratings
Most quilts are not tested to ISO 23537, and makers rate them differently. Some cottage makers rate to a limit, others closer to comfort. We explain those differences on every relevant page and in our temperature ratings guide, and we usually suggest choosing a quilt rated around 10°F below your expected low.
What we never do
- Claim lab tests or nights out that did not happen.
- Accept payment for placement or positive coverage.
- Invent prices, star ratings or user counts. We use price tiers because cottage prices change often.
